Bagger Dave’s Burger Tavern (Centerville, West Chester)
Updated: January 18, 2017
I settled into the booth at Bagger Dave’s reluctantly. I hate trying new and unknown (to me) restaurants. The chances of finding a meal that is gluten free, actually safe, and (gasp!) tasty are little to none, especially the first go-around. Plus, I was hungry.
I opened the menu and these two red letters popped out all over the place.
Really? I thought to myself. Surely they are just falling into the fad and noting GF willy-nilly all over the place without any regard to cross contamination. (Yes, Celiac Disease has made me very skeptical, and grumpy at times.) I scanned the pages for the biggest hint of cross contamination – fried food. You know what I found? Crispy Fried Artichokes. “Ah-Ha! Caught ya!” No. Wait. Those are marked GF, too.
I needed to talk to the staff. Stat.
You know what? Those Crispy Fried Artichokes are battered using rice flour. The other items that make their way into the fryer are potato chips and French fries. This fryer is safe!
I excitedly, and thoroughly read the entire menu (at my family’s dismay – they were hungry, too!). I decided on the Crispy Fried Artichokes (pictured above) and the Santa Fe Chipotle Burger. Burgers without the bun are called a Bagger Bowl and you choose to have it served on mixed greens, or nothing at all.
The kids split the Cheeseburger Sliders off of the ‘Lil Baggers’ menu and it was plenty of food for my four and seven year old to share. The Mr. ordered Caleb’s Crispy Cheese Bacon Burger and enjoyed it immensely (although the next time we visited he added a fried egg, which in his opinion, put it over the top). My meal was tasty, filling, and those Crispy Fried Artichokes? Well, I have already been back three times for those.
The dessert menu is decidedly lacking in GF options. Unless you want a Hand-Dipped Shake, or Ice Cream Sundae (in which neither are marked GF) I would move on and have dessert elsewhere.
If you have a child with GF needs, there are no items on the “Lil Baggers” menu that will be safe. Either share your meal, or order a full size/priced meal ($ouch!).
Update: I spoke with the staff about this – you can order a bagger bowl in a kids size!
Bagger Dave’s make their own sodas with real cane sugar. You won’t find name brand sodas here! Look for the Mystery Flavor of the Month (it was Grape when we visited) plus flavors such as Black Cherry Cream and Orange Cream.
Their bar menu offers a large selection of local craft beers (which is nice for those friends you brought along) and also stock a hard cider for GF enjoyment.
All kids meals are $2.75 on Wednesdays and Sundays. Dine-in only
