Cavu Coffee (West Chester, Butler County)
That sounds fine and all, but unless you are really diligent, coffee shops can often be cross contamination traps. Hence the reason Dunkin Donuts and Tim Horton’s are no longer on my caffeine fix list. Not to worry! I have a place for you to try, and truly take a break with a friend, bang out some work on your device, or just chill by yourself. Whatever your reason, you will be able to breath easy at CAVU Coffee.
The owners, Emily and Kurt Schanie provide a bright, sleek, cheerful and welcoming space with coffee that is unmatched in both taste and presentation. Not only will you find a great cup of joe, there are always interesting, seasonal drinks on the menu. Such as a Lavender Vanilla Latte, in the spring, a Pumpkin White Mocha, in the fall, and many others in between.
Here is the kicker! This is a local owned and operated shop whose owners source local vendors whenever possible. Take the honey, for example. That’s from the Don Popp’s Honey Farm and is really yummy in a honey latte. And those coffee beans? They are roasted locally by La Terza Roasterie and you will find that exact date right on the menu board. Not only do they source locally, they also make all of the chocolate & caramel sauces in house & will make all of the syrups in house by the end of 2016! Vanilla extract is made right there, and used in numerous baking products, sauces, whipped cream, and of course, vanilla syrup. They only use cane sugar and never use artificial flavors or preservatives. Every thing is made in small batches. To top it off, they use all organic half & half, heavy whipping cream and non GMO soy & almond milks.
How about a safe gluten free pick me up, beyond the morning nectar? Order one of their five flavors of gluten free biscotti, a cute little banana bread, pumpkin chocolate chip loaf or a lemon pound cake – all gluten free. I know what you are thinking… for real? ALL of those are gluten free in one place? Yes, and not only are they gluten free, they are made by a local baker, Bites of Nostalgia, whose owner suffers from celiac disease. Worried about cross contamination? Don’t! The bread loaves are kept individually wrapped, and the biscotti are sealed in jars.
Are you on a Paleo regime? They have treats for you, too. Emily and Amanda of Paleo Primal Sweets keep CAVU Coffee stocked with Chocolate Chip Cookies and Fudgy Brownies. Double Chocolate Donuts and Pumpkin Pecan Muffins are new features on the menu. Made with nut flours, these confections are soy-free, dairy free, and contain no refined sugar.
Let’s not leave out your friend who is a traditional diner. CAVU Coffee crafts yummy blueberry muffins, brownies, dream bars, breakfast sandwiches and yogurt parfaits right there in the tiny kitchen.
So the next time you are cruising south on I-75 between Dayton and Cincinnati, take a short detour off the highway – pass up that Starbucks on the corner – and take in a local joint that will not disappoint.
