Spice Rack & Bulk Foods (Downtown Dayton, Beavercreek)
Spice Rack and Bulk Foods has been a staple at the 2nd Street Market in downtown Dayton since its inception sixteen years ago. What started out as a spice, flour & nut trader for the typical home pantry, has bloomed into a full service one-stop location for the best gluten free ingredients in southwest Ohio. Four years ago a local husband and wife team, Bart and Jamie Dolbeer, purchased the business from the original owner. Jamie tells me she immediately saw the potential to fine tune the stock offerings and to add hard to find gluten free flours and ingredients to the line up. “I have a background in nursing, so I was very familiar with the needs of people who suffer from Celiac disease”.
With the business succeeding, they expanded to a second location in Beavercreek about a year later. The rear of the store serves as a facility where they process and carefully weigh packaged goods. I asked Jamie about her practices in preventing cross contamination, as there are glutenous items lining the shelves. She was very open and understanding to my question because as a gluten sensitive person herself, she knows the dangers. “We have a separate packaging station for all the gluten free items we carry, and we only package those items on Monday mornings, after the store has been closed and cleaned over the weekend. We also store all GF items in their own area”.
Jamie and her staff are more than happy to work with customers to get them what they need. Whether you have a recipe calling for a hard to find item, or a bulk order is on the horizon, just call and chances are they can help. Although they do not have an eCommerce site, they are prepared to package and ship products as needed.
Not only does this family-owned business do a great job with their own products, they also work with other local vendors to bring in non-GMO eggs, cheeses, milk, candies, honey, and freshly baked breads & treats (see the links below). They have been a tremendous supporter of the community since the day they opened and continue to find new ways to contribute. Their newest product speaks to that sentiment – “We have taken our top 10 spice blends and branded them under the name ‘Market Made’. The exciting part for us is that this line has a purpose! We are donating a portion of these sales to anti human trafficking organizations. We are also working with local agencies to be able to employ victims of human trafficking. We have designed this new brand for this purpose. To help educate, bring awareness, support and to also help empower victims.”
