Bareburger (Columbus, Ohio)
The first time I ate at a Bareburger was during a trip to Washington, DC. Our first night there we were just looking for a good place to eat near our hotel, and Bareburger had good ratings on Find Me Gluten Free. I had no idea what a treat I was in for. It was the first time I had felt safe ordering a burger (with a bun!) from a restaurant since my Celiac diagnosis and it tasted amazing. I was even more excited to discover, during a day trip to Columbus, that we have two locations right here in Ohio (both in Columbus)!
Bareburger is a chain, with franchise locations in the US, Germany, United Arab Emirates, and Japan. Their goal is to serve delicious burgers with ingredients that are sustainably sourced, locally when possible. They are basically a burger, fries, and shakes kind of place, although they do offer salads and other sandwiches as well. They have a list of specialty burgers to choose from or you can build your own. The options are a bit mind-boggling at first, there are so many. Just as far as the patty is concerned, you can get burgers made from beef, bison, black beans, duck, elk, quinoa, grilled lemon chicken, sesame ginger beef, sweet potato and wild rice, turkey, or wild boar. All except the black bean and quinoa are gluten free. For your bun, to keep it gluten free you can choose to have your burger on a tapioca bun, with no bun, served on a lettuce bed, or wrapped with a collard. Their french fries and sweet potato fries are fried separately and kept gluten free. Other gluten free items—and there are a lot—are listed clearly on the menu.
I have eaten at Bareburger three times now and each time the food has been delicious. I didn’t get too fancy, opting for beef with a tapioca bun, but I changed up the toppings each time. They have so many cheeses, vegetables, sauces—all gluten free—and other toppings to choose from, the combinations feel limitless.
Beyond their burgers and fries, I also highly recommend trying their milkshakes. My personal favorite is the Mexican Chocolate, made with chocolate ice cream, cayenne, cinnamon, and a “torched marshmallow.” Just thinking about it makes me want one.
