Macaron Bar (Cincinnati: Over the Rhine, Hyde Park, Loveland & Kenwood Towne Centre)
We were driving to a friend’s birthday party in Cincinnati when I suddenly spotted out the car window a store front with the words ‘Macaron Bar‘. Within three turns we arrived at the party, and within thirty minutes I was back out the door heading to that store. (I wasn’t rude to the hosts… promise!)
I entered the store and encountered a charming young lady who was happy to help me. I found out that the macarons are naturally gluten free, made with two almond meringue cookies and a creamy flavored ganache center. (Not to be confused with macaroons, which are dense drop-cookies composed of egg whites, sugar, and dried coconut, often piped with a star-shaped tip, and sometimes dipped in chocolate.) I took a long, long, look at the thirteen (thirteen!) flavors and decided to try a mix of six flavors. I’ll break down my thoughts on each…
Coffee – This macaron had a very strong coffee flavor (which I liked!) without having one hint of bitterness. Not overly sweet, and perfectly balanced with the chocolate ganache.
Salted Caramel – Oh so good, and not overly caramel-y. The slight amount of salt was just the right amount to draw the flavors together.
Raspberry – Light, refreshing, and surprisingly no artificial berry flavor. It tasted like a true raspberry and I could find myself eating more than one very easily.
Pistachio – Pistachio is one of my favorite flavors and this macaron did not disappoint. Sometimes pistachio products can be way too sweet, but I found this was nutty, and not spoiled with too much sugar. I’ll be back for seconds.
Lemon – If you love lemon, and I mean really, really love lemon, you will love these. While there was not an artificial lemon taste – the flavor was all natural – I found this macaron to be too strong and a little overly lemony.
Chocolate Orange Blossom – I am a big fan of candied orange peel coated in chocolate, so I had high hopes this macaron would be on par with my favorite candy. It was good, but fell short of my high expectations. The chocolate and orange seemed to cancel each other out and neither one shined or complemented the other like I had hoped.
Other favors, which I have not tried (yet!) include Madagascar Vanilla, Dark Chocolate, Passion Fruit, Chocolate Strawberry, Rose, Blackcurrant, and Earl Grey Tea.
These macarons are a great treat, and I do mean treat, as they are $2.25 each, $13/12, or $25/12. You can get a beautiful tower for $75(+) and would think this is perfect for a baby or wedding shower.
